Hey there! My husband travelled from America to be with me in Australia about three and a half years ago. So times and info might be a little off, but I can share my experiences.

It took us about three months for us to be approved with the fiance visa - no problems at all. It really depends on exactly what your medical history is, but as a rule the Aussie government just wants to know you won't be a drain on society. When we had to apply for the spouse visa, after we were married, we had a harder time with medicals. My husband has a history of depression, and while they didn't care about checking it out before he arrived, they made him get a psychiatric evaluation before they'd grant the next visa. No biggie, although it was a bit pricey as he couldn't get the universal health care at that point.

As far as advice goes I'd say just to follow the instructions on the visa forms and send us much information as you can ... at that point there's no such thing as too much info. Also the people on the immigration helpline are awesome, so your partner shouldn't hesitate to contact them if you have any questions!

Good luck! It's a really big move but a few years on my husband says he'd never want to live anywhere else!
